To study this, they had rats learn the relationship between different cues and rewards. They also thought larger rewards would make for faster learning. If rats were motivated with something positive, like a reward, scientists guessed they would learn faster than when there was no reward. Because of this, scientists will often use an animal model so that they can learn more about the way human bodies work. Unless a person is having surgery, it is unlikely that she or he would allow a scientist to do this. Scientists wanted to record from the basal forebrain, which meant that they needed to put electrodes into the brain. Why rats? Usually, animals are used for experiments when using a human would not be possible. Scientists used rats to test these differences in motivation. This is an example of motivational salience. So the 10 point assignment would stand out to you. You would probably pick the one with more extra credit if you were motivated to improve your grade. Other people might pick the harder assignment because the points are more important to them. Some people would pick the easier assignment so they would have more time for other things. Scientists use animals for experiments when using a human would not be possible. Scientists used rats to test motivational salience. How much something stands out to people might differ because they might be motivated by different things. Motivational salience, then, is something that stands out to you and makes you feel motivated. Salience refers to how much something stands out, like a red piece of candy in the middle of a bunch of blue ones. However, we are all motivated by different things. It is a reason a person has for acting in a particular way or carrying out some action. Motivation is the desire to do something and it's usually due to some sort of reward. When the primary fire key/button is released, the shots converge on each other and spread outward. The converging shot fires six evenly-spread plasma bursts that travel forward for as long as the primary fire key/button is held down. This is an unorthodox weapon in that it's like a mid to long-range shotgun with additional effects. This weapon is the weapon of choice for corridors, but can be used effectively in other situations where a player can accurately predict where the target will go. However, a well-placed electro combo will almost always kill a player who's close to all three elecro plasmas. Both the primary and secondary shots are usable on their own, making the electro quite flexible. This weapon is at its core an area denial weapon. The electro consumes ammunition quite quickly though a full burst of three electro plasmas and a plasma shot to detonate them will consume a total of 10 cells. The electro plasma spheres can be detonated with a plasma shot, dealing staggering damage over a large area. They detonate a few seconds after they're fired, dealing low damage. The electro plasma shots are fired in bursts of up to three and act much like grenades that deal damage on impact with an enemy. The weapon's primary plasma shot is much like a non-homing rocket shot from any other game, albeit with a rather small blast radius. Damage: 30 if contacted by enemy, 50 each if combo. ![]() As such, the mortar has its fair share of uses as an area denial weapon as well. On its own, it can be quite devastating in tight corridors, as the grenades can bounce behind corners and the mortars can be very difficult to dodge. The mortar is a very good weapon for weapon combos either with the Devastator (Rocket Launcher) or the Vortex. The grenade shot fires significantly faster than the mortar shot. The grenade shot detonates half a second after the grenade hits a surface or immediately if it hits a target. The mortar shot is a simple arcing shot that can travel long distances, detonates on impact, and does considerable damage over a fair splash radius. It's a better attack at mid-range where the continuous fire doesn't deal nearly as much damage.Ī long-range explosive weapon with a slow firing rate. It's substantially more accurate, but requires a slight delay in between pulses. The burst shot consists of three shots in rapid succession. It can be very good for quickly killing an approaching enemy. This spray is therefore best used at close range, provided that the player can keep the crosshairs fixed on a target. This weapon's primary shot is a rapid fire but relatively inaccurate spray of bullets. All the core weapons are given when the mutator "Most Weapons" is activated. These are the staple weapons of Xonotic and are the only ones found on official maps. However, the melee attack has a significant delay as the player raises the shotgun, giving the target time to dodge it. Although not immediately obvious, it has a small splash range so it can be used to hit two opponents in the same swing. Its secondary melee attack is not to be underestimated, as it can do very heavy damage. At mid range, however, the weapon is very difficult to use effectively as the shots have a considerable spread. The shotgun is, however, a good finishing weapon. It's best suited as a close-range weapon owing to the fact that each individual shot as very low damage. As such, you might want to consider using Captain Melody in the lower octaves if you want a pattern with a bit more of a playful shape to it. They are fairly similar, although Deep produces simpler and flatter patterns for use as basslines, and Melody has a few extra options to let you control the melodic shape and chord Tension. When you want to add in some extra layers, you can turn to Captain Deep and Captain Melody, which take their lead from Captain Chords and will transpose if you make any master changes. ![]() The sounds themselves won’t set the world alight, but there’s a decent amount of variety, from synth pads, plucks and leads, to pianos, guitars, organs and strings, to help inspire an initial idea. Most primary schools in the UK fall into this category. Perversely, children who become reliant on sight words and contextual guessing may seem, at first, to make faster progress that even the most able decoders, especially if the school still has reading books that are designed to encourage guessing and sight word memorisation. Our brains are limited and can only store a few thousand such visual representations of words when many tens of thousands are needed to achieve a reasonable level of literacy. It might well be much easier for them to read (initially) using this alternative strategy but unfortunately it is an ineffective method. The problem is that for children who find learning phonics difficult this second ‘method’ may seem very attractive. You can’t tell which kind of a word a word is just by looking at it, so you’ll simply have to guess which strategy to use, and sometimes, just guess what the word is”īut, far worse than confusion is the real damage that this can cause by giving children the idea (whether deliberately or inadvertently) that there are not one but two ways of reading 1) decoding 2) memorising whole words as a picture or logograph. Some words are read by decoding and some are read by memorising how they look. Imagine yourself as a young learner faced with attempting to decipher text for the first time, and you are told something along the lines of: The reason they should be taught this strategy is simply because it is the correct one it is the one that represents how English works and is the one that will enable them to become the best reader they can be. It is confusing because children need to have one, just one, ‘word-attack’ strategy and that is to use their phonic knowledge to decode a word all the way through from left to right. The problem with teaching sight words as if they are a separate class of word is first of all, it leads to confusion and secondly, it is likely to have a long-term, detrimental effect on a substantial proportion of your most vulnerable readers. ![]() In other schools, the teaching of sight words is more ‘accidental’, with ‘tricky’*, or more advanced words being mis-presented as sight words (rather than harder-to-decode words) because the child hasn’t yet been taught to decode them. These are usually words from a ‘high frequency word’ list as mentioned or, much like Dolch’s idea, words extracted from the school’s reading scheme books e.g. This may be done very explicitly with, for example, words printed on flashcards presented for the child to learn. They laid the foundations for the ‘whole word” or “whole language” methods of teaching reading and a quick Google search will confirm that Dolch and other similar sight word lists are still in widespread use, particularly in the U.S.Ī more common situation in the UK today is the teaching of phonics alongside the teaching of ‘high frequency words’ as sight words, sometimes even if the sight words are easily decodable with only a basic grasp of the English ‘code’. The well-intentioned idea was to short-cut the sometimes lengthy process of learning to read, and thus quickly achieve fluency. ![]() Edward William Dolch in America, who analysed popular children’s books of the time to come up with a list of words for children to be taught to ‘read’ on sight i.e. The concept was developed in the 1930s and 40s by Dr. ![]() What is a sight word? – It is a word that can be read on sight, the implication being without the need to decode it. ![]() ![]() Finally, these types of action verbs can be very useful in writing cover letters, as well.
